Merz: 'The biggest poison for economies is uncertainty. We need a common EU position"
The German Chancellor announced that he will hold talks with European allies on a joint response
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will confront US President Donald Trump on tariffs with a united European front. This was stated by Merz himself, after the US Supreme Court ruling.
"I will go to Washington with a coordinated European position," Merz told the German broadcaster Ard, as reported by Politico, after the Cdu congress in Stuttgart, emphasising that tariff policy is a matter for the EU, not for individual member states. Merz described the Supreme Court's decision as "an interesting development" that showed that the Trump administration had been imposed limits on tariff policy. The ruling has "a reassuring element", he said. "The separation of powers in the US still seems to work, and that is good news," he remarked.
At the same time, Merz argued that tariffs ultimately harm the country that imposes them. "They primarily harm the country that imposes them," he said, noting that while Germany bears part of the burden through weaker exports, American consumers ultimately pay higher prices.
"The biggest poison for the economies of Europe and the United States is this constant uncertainty about tariffs. And this uncertainty must end," Merz said again, commenting with reporters on the new tariffs imposed by Donald Trump in the aftermath of the Supreme Court ruling.
