German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterates his no to Unicredit's takeover of Commerzbank. The German government is committed to a 'strong and independent Commerzbank', Merz wrote in a letter published on his Linkdln profile by the chairman of the works council, Sascha Uebel. In the letter Merz labelled UniCredit's approach as 'uncoordinated and hostile' and this is 'unacceptable', Merz wrote, according to Bloomberg reports.
"As has already been emphasised several times, also publicly, the German government counts on a strong and independent Commerzbank," reads a letter that Friedrich Merz sent to the chairman of the works council of Commerzbank, the workers' representative body. The letter dates back to 26 May but was published today on Linkedin by the recipients of the missive. Merz also writes: 'I share the view of the Federal Minister of Finance that an uncoordinated and unfriendly approach such as that of the UniCredit Group is unacceptable'.
