Budget: Messina says they are willing to find ways to reduce public debt
"Selling off public property worth 50–100 billion"
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Italian banks can now “help reduce public debt” through “products equivalent to government bonds to provide a guarantee to savers” regarding the disposal of “hundreds of billions of properties on the public balance sheet”. This was stated by Carlo Messina, chief executive of Intesa Sanpaolo, in an interview at the Forum Moneta, whilst responding to a question on the role of banks ahead of the forthcoming budget. He pointed out that there are “500–600 billion in property held by the regions; the idea is to dispose of perhaps 50–100 billion worth of property to be allocated to Italian households. This would lead to a reduction in public debt.” In particular, Intesa Sanpaolo “is willing to identify financial instruments to be offered to households that represent these public properties”. Banks “can provide support through products equivalent to government bonds to offer guarantees to savers”.
