The trial of Meta has begun. The government's lawyers explained to the judge that a 'break-up' of the company, accused of illegally monopolising the social media market with the acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp, would be necessary. "For more than 100 years, American policy has insisted that companies must compete if they want to succeed. The reason we are here is that Meta has violated that,' said Federal Trade Commission attorney Daniel Matheson. Should the government prevail, there will most likely be a spinoff of Instagram and WhatsApp. The trial is expected to last two months and see the CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and former manager Sheryl Sandberg take the stand, perhaps as early as this week.
