Meta: responds to EU survey findings, “measures have been taken to protect teenagers”
The EU’s allegations: it is addictive through Instagram and Facebook
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - “We do not agree with these preliminary findings, which do not take sufficient account of the significant measures we have taken to protect teenagers.” This was Meta’s response, via a spokesperson, to the allegations made by the European Commission, which has provisionally found the US group guilty of breaching the Digital Services Act due to the addictive design of Instagram and Facebook.
“Since this investigation began, we have launched accounts for teenagers, which automatically protect young people and give parents control — allowing them to block access to Instagram at night and limit daily usage to just 15 minutes”, explains the spokesperson, emphasising that the company shares “the European Commission’s commitment to ensuring safe and positive online experiences for young people, and we will continue to work with them constructively”. The investigation focuses on features such as infinite scrolling, autoplay, push notifications and the platforms’ highly personalised recommendation systems.
