Michelin: the site in Alessandria is focusing on giving tyres a new lease of life
The Piedmont site has celebrated its 55th anniversary – Mr Mazzocchi: “Over the past five years, we have invested over 400 million in technology and flexibility”
The Michelin plant in Alessandria is celebrating its 55th anniversary; it is one of the multinational’s two plants in Italia, where the company has deep industrial roots. The site, which employs 950 people, specialises in the production of large-sized lorry tyres and is a benchmark for the Michelin Group in terms of innovation, skills development and flexibility.
The Group has been working on the factory’s sustainability in recent years, achieving a 64 per cent reduction in water consumption since 2019, as well as bringing forward to 2027 – according to estimates – by 2027, thanks to the refurbishment of the heating plant serving the production area.
With a production capacity of nearly 1.2 million tyres a year and a site area of over 470,000 square metres, the Michelin plant in Alessandria has, over the years, consolidated its specialisation whilst also diversifying its production to include tyres for rubber-tyred metro systems and large-sized products for agricultural vehicles and civil engineering applications.
Around 60 per cent of the output from the Group’s factory in Alessandria is destined for Europe, whilst the remaining 40 per cent is exported to other markets around the world. The site operates in both the aftermarket and original equipment sectors, working in partnership with leading manufacturers of lorries, semi-trailers, quarry vehicles and specialised vehicles.
Agostino Mazzocchi, Chairman and Chief Executive of Michelin Italiana, reiterated Italia’s central role within the Group, as evidenced by the more than 430 million euros the company has invested in Italy over the last five years. The focus at the plant is on the Multivite range: “It represents one of the distinctive features of Michelin’s offering for commercial transport,” explained the CEO. “These tyres are designed to last longer and have multiple lives thanks to regrooving and retreading. It is an approach that helps to reduce the total cost of ownership for transport companies and, at the same time, to minimise resource consumption and CO₂ emissions.”
