Microsoft announced the dismissal of 3% of employees at all levels, teams and geographic areas.
"We continue to implement the necessary organisational changes to better position the company for success in a dynamic market," a company spokesperson said in a statement to Cnbc.
The company reported better-than-expected results and an optimistic quarterly forecast at the end of April. At the end of June, Microsoft had 228,000 employees worldwide, which means that the decision will affect thousands of employees.
This is probably the largest round of layoffs at Microsoft since the elimination of 10,000 positions in 2023.
In January, the company announced a small round of performance-based layoffs. These new job cuts are not performance-related, a company spokesperson said.
