Microsoft ends up under indictment in California: a user has filed a lawsuit against the company saying it prematurely ended support for Windows 10, forcing people to buy new devices. Microsoft will end free support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025, prompting millions of users to switch to Windows 11 or pay for security updates.
The affair
.A move that has led Lawrence Klein to sue the company, claiming that the measure forces those with PCs that are not compatible with the new system to buy expensive, AI-ready hardware: the man owns two Windows 10 laptops that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 due to the lack of the Trusted Platform Module 2.0 (Tpm), which is required for the updated operating system to work.
The company currently charges $30 for the first year of extended support for Windows 10, and this year is free if you use Reward Points or sign in with a Microsoft account and synchronise your data on the cloud. But Klein wants the court to force Microsoft to offer free support for Windows 10 'until the number of devices using the operating system falls below 10 per cent of total Windows users'.
