Just a few hours before Microsoft Build, the annual conference for developers where new developments in the field of generative artificial intelligence will be showcased, a small event reserved for journalists presented the future of Windows PCs enhanced with Ai gen. "A new generation of notebooks is being born that will make the world a prompt," said Microsoft's number one Satya Nadella, who called these machines "Copilot + Pc". On the chip side of the ball is Intel, Amd and now Qualcom. In fact, the new line of Surface latpots based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite processor instead of Intel's Core Ultra processor was presented.
Microsoft embraces Arm
Investing in the San Diego company's chips is not only Microsoft. These hours, personal computer giants such as Asus, Dell, Samsung and Lenovo are also presenting Ai Gen machines that exploit the Snapdragon platform. For the historic Intel-Amd duopoly, which together control almost the entire landscape of laptops with x86 architecture, it is a sign that a new competitor has arrived at the very moment when the PC market is relaunching.
The move is also interesting from a symbolic point of view. Already in 2019, Redmond had started with the Microsoft Surface Pro X to work together with Qualcomm on the Arm architecture.
Microsoft's ambition with the global success of generative artificial intelligence - remember that it has invested 11 billion in OpenAI - is however to set a new standard in PCs. And to go back to competing on the hardware side with Apple's more powerful and efficient machines, which in the last ten years at least have shown the best performance in terms of technology. Windows, it was explained, now has more native Arm64 applications than ever before, including Chrome, Spotify, Zoom, Slack, Blender and Davinci Resolve
