A few weeks after the debut of Veo 3, it is now the turn of Midjourney: one of the most popular start-ups in the field of artificial intelligence, which, in 2022, launched its platform for generating images from textual descriptions.
The new model presented by the company is called V1 and is capable of converting images to video: users will be able to feed the model with one or more images, even generated by other models of the same Midjourney, which will produce a series of four five-second videos based on the indications provided such as, for example, movement settings. The new feature, christened Image-to-video, will allow images to be generated in Midjourney and also animated by clicking the Animate button. In addition, by choosing the video you like best from those proposed, it will be possible to extend its duration by four seconds at a time.
This is an interesting novelty but obviously not the only one available on the market. Indeed, with the arrival of V1, Midjourney enters into a challenge with competing proposals such as OpenAI's Sora, Adobe's Firefly or Google's Veo 3. However, unlike companies aiming to launch AI video tools geared towards corporate or advertising contexts, David Holz's company has so far built its reputation by offering models aimed at designers, artists and creatives.
As pointed out by TechCrunch, the CEO stated in a blogpost that this new tool represents an important step towards the goal of realising artificial intelligences capable of real-time open-world simulations, and in the future they will work on the development of 3D rendering-oriented models and real-time content.
Also noteworthy is the pricing strategy adopted. From an economic point of view, Midjourney has chosen a policy that takes into account the high load required for video generation: generating a video with AI is about eight times more expensive than creating an image, with the consequence that users will consume their monthly credit more quickly. For this reason, the Basic subscription has a monthly cost of $10, representing the most affordable solution to test the model's potential; users with a Pro or Mega plan, $60 and $120 respectively, will be able to generate unlimited videos in Relax mode.
