There were two barges wrecked off Lampedusa. This was reported by some of the 61 survivors who came ashore on board patrol boats. The dead number 27. Eight have already been brought to the island. The missing number 30-40.
The Agrigento public prosecutor's office opened an investigation for manslaughter.
Adnkronos learns from qualified sources that shortly after 11am the Gdf Volpe aircraft had spotted an overturned boat with dead bodies in international waters, about 14 nautical miles from Lampedusa (Sar italy). Following the sighting, the Coast Guard immediately intervened to rescue the shipwrecked people. Italian assets were present in the Lampedusa area at that time, as well as NGO ships. In particular, Astral (Great Britain) was 13 miles from the site of the shipwreck. According to the first statements of the rescued migrants, two boats left Tripoli between 2am and 4am last night. One started taking on water and the migrants then moved onto the other boat, which subsequently capsized due to the swell.
The barges had left from Tripoli.
Meloni: dismay at shipwreck, traffickers inhuman
"When a tragedy like today's occurs, with the death of dozens of people in the waters of the Mediterranean, a strong feeling of dismay and compassion arises in all of us. And we measure the inhuman cynicism with which human traffickers organise these shady journeys. Together with our deep sorrow for the victims, our pity for those who have lost their lives, we therefore renew our commitment to fight these unscrupulous traffickers in the only possible way: to prevent irregular departures, to manage migratory flows". This was stated by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after the Lampedusa shipwreck.
