A new shipwreck occurred in the central Mediterranean Sea, in the waters of the search and rescue (SAR) area under Maltese jurisdiction. According to the first information, reported by Agi, a boat with about 60 migrants on board capsized about 45 nautical miles east-southeast of the island of Malta.
10 lifeless bodies
At the moment, 48 people have been rescued from a fishing boat in the area, while the Italian Coast Guard has recovered ten lifeless bodies. Two people are still missing and the search operations continue unabated.
The intervention took place in the afternoon
The intervention was triggered on Sunday afternoon after reports of migrants in the water. At the request of the Maltese authorities, a patrol boat of the Italian Coast Guard was immediately diverted to the area to participate in rescue activities. The boat, which left from the Libyan coast, was initially monitored by the competent SAR authority and later by the Maltese one. Operations are coordinated by Malta, which is responsible for the search and rescue area where the incident occurred, with the support of Italian assets present in the central Mediterranean.
