Migrants: Italia and Denmark spearhead a letter to EU leaders, signed by 22 leaders
Following the events in Ceuta, an “immediate and coordinated response” is needed
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - “We cannot allow uncontrolled mass crossings, the exploitation of migration or other hybrid threats to create the perception that illegal entry into the European Union is possible. That the illegal entry of a migrant could lead to legal residence.” This is stated in a passage from the letter initiated by Italia and Denmark and signed by 22 European heads of state and government, addressed to the President of the European Council, António Costa, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President-in-Office of the Council of the European Union, Micheál Martin. With this initiative, following the arrival of thousands of migrants in Ceuta, the governments of the individual countries intend to call for “an immediate and coordinated European response” from the Union. In particular, the current President of the Council of the European Union, the Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin, is being asked to urgently convene an extraordinary video conference of interior ministers to jointly assess the situation and define a coordinated European response.
