Migrants: new landings on Lampedusa, over a thousand arrivals in 24 hours

Over a thousand migrants have arrived on the island of Lampedusa in the space of a day and a half. After Sunday's arrivals, more migrants arrived between yesterday and this morning. The latest landing was at dawn today, 15 October, with 48 migrants arriving on the island. They are added to the approximately 960 of the day before. There are almost a thousand guests at the hotspot in contrada Imbriacola where new transfers are expected to begin later today. Yesterday, in the morning, 233 had been transferred. For today, the prefecture of Agrigento has ordered the transfer of 220 migrants by ferry to Porto Empedocle and then, in the afternoon, another 168 will be embarked on an Oim flight to Milan.

In the last few hours, the Tunisian Coast Guard stopped an illegal migration attempt from the coast of Salakta near Mahdia, stopping a total of about fifty sub-Saharans. This was reported by the spokesman of the Monastir and Mahdia courts, Farid Ben Jha, on the local radio station Jawhara Fm. The spokesman added that the migrants ignored the officers' stop and threw stones at the security units. The police then used tear gas to control the situation. During the operation, the boat that was to be used for the crossing was seized.
