Migrants, newborn girl dies of hypothermia after disembarking in Lampedusa
The Agrigento public prosecutor's office opens an investigation into the death of the little girl who arrived in Italy on a boat carrying 55 people
A infant died immediately after disembarking at Lampedusa and during the transfer to the Poliambulatorio. At 4.30 a.m., after being rescued by the patrol boat V1307 of the Guardia di Finanza, 55 people from Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Guinea, Mali, Nigeria and Sierra Leone landed on the Favarolo pier. Among them were seven women and six minors. The newborn girl was found to be in critical condition and together with her mother was transferred to the Outpatient Clinic where doctors pronounced her dead. The baby died of hypothermia.
The Procuracy of Agrigento has opened an enquiry: a cadaveric inspection has been ordered to confirm hypothermia as the cause of death. The mother will be heard to reconstruct the details of the crossing and how and when the child began to feel ill. The body is being transferred to the mortuary of the Cala Pisana cemetery.
