Milan Cortina, Chiara Mazzel gold in the visually impaired Super-G
It was the second victory of the Italian expedition and, after the silver medal in the downhill debut, the second podium for the Fiamme Gialle skier. Bertagnolli silver in the men's Super G. First gold for Russia as well
Chiara Mazzel with guide Nicola Cotti Cottini took the gold in the AS2 visually impaired women's Super-G at the Paralympics in Milan Cortina. It is the second victory of the Italian expedition and, after silver in the downhill debut, the second podium for the Fiamme Gialle skier. The Italian skier achieved the best time of 1'14''84. Silver for Austria's Veronika Aigner (+0.60) and bronze for Slovakia's Alexandra Rexova (+4.85). Fourth place went to Martina Vozza with guide Ylenia Sabidussi.
On the men's side, Giacomo Bertagnolli, led by Andrea Ravelli, was silver in the super-G. The Italian finished just 16 hundredths from the gold, which was won by Austrian Johannes Aigner. For the 29-year-old from Cavalese in Trentino, and holder of the Fiamme Gialle, this is the tenth Paralympic medal, the fourth silver, and the second in this edition of the Games after the bronze in the downhill.
There is also the victory of Russia's Varvara Voronchikhina in the women's Super-G standing. This is Russia's first gold medal at a Paralympic event since its home Games in Sochi 2014, given its exclusion in Pyeongchang 2018 for non-compliance with anti-doping regulations and its exclusion in Beijing 2022 for invading Ukraine. After two bronze medals in recent days (one of which was won by Voronchikhina herself), therefore, Moscow returns to the top step of the podium with not only its own flag but also its anthem.
