Milan exonerate Allegri: Furlani, Tare and Moncada also leave
The club announces a major reorganisation after a disappointing season. The coaching waltz begins
Not even 24 hours before the end of the championship, the domino of coaches has officially begun. And the one to unleash it is AC Milan, who long contended with Inter for the Scudetto before clamorously staying out of the Champions zone afterthe last day. Gerry Cardinale, in a not unexpected move, rescinded the management in its entirety, sending away technical director Geoffrey Moncada, managing director Giorgio Furlani and sporting director Igli Tare with immediate effect.
A true revolution that also involved coach Massimiliano Allegri, who thus leaves the Diavolo after just one season. "The mandate defined by the ownership for the club was clear: return to the Champions League and build the foundations to win and remain continuously at the top of Serie A. For most of the season we remained in the top two positions in the league, with a concrete possibility of competing for the Scudetto. The end of the season, however, was well below the level we had shown up to that point, and last night's disappointing defeat turned this season into an unequivocal failure - the hard stance of RedBird Capital Partners - It is now time for change and a profound reorganisation of the club's sporting area. At this stage it will be up to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cardinale's super consultant, to deal with the corporate restructuring. And who knows if in the rooms of Via Aldo Rossi they haven't given a thought to Antonio Conte. He will be leaving Naples - the official announcement came later today after the post-match farewell press conference with Udinese - but perhaps not the Azzurri, as the idea of returning to the national team to try and relaunch the movement after the third World Cup non-qualification teases the coach from Puglia. Conte has already been coach between 2014 and 2016, when he led Italia to the European Championships that ended with an elimination in the quarter-finals at the hands of Germany, then champions. Conte's name, however, is not the only one on the table, in a bigger game that is intertwined with the election of the next FIGC president (Giovanni Malagò and Giancarlo Abete are in the running), which will only be concluded on 22 June. The candidature of Roberto Mancini, another possible comeback after the glories of Euro 2021 and the sudden farewell in the 2023 Ferragosto (August bank holiday), remains strong.
The other profile around which the coaching market inevitably revolves now is that of Allegri himself, destined to become a strong option for the Azzurri bench as well as that of Napoli. It is no secret that president Aurelio De Laurentiis has long appreciated him. Possible contacts between the businessman and the Livorno-born player's entourage could take place in the next few hours. The Campania club, having vanished the target of Maurizio Sarri, who is about to rejoin Cristiano Giuntoli at Atalanta, is also evaluating other profiles on the launching pad, such as Vincenzo Italiano, outgoing from Bologna and appreciated by several teams on a par with Fabio Grosso and Daniele De Rossi. Lazio, on the other hand, have already identified the man to start from for next season: Sarri's replacement should be Rino Gattuso, who is willing to leave behind the bitter experience as coach in order to test himself again in Serie A.
The Juventus, who, like Milan, have 'punched a hole' in the top four, are finally convinced to continue the relationship with Luciano Spalletti, who arrived during the current season and was able to conquer the environment and the ownership to the point of earning a renewal - signed a few weeks ago - until 2028. It remains to be seen how the Lady will change around him: from the pitch to the management it will be a summer of profound changes even inside the walls of Continassa.
