In a note on its website, AC Milan announced 'officially that Paulo Fonseca has been relieved of his duties as coach of the men's first team'. The club 'thanks Paulo for his great professionalism and wishes him all the best for the future'. The club also announced the name of the new Rossoneri coach, who will be another Portuguese: Sergio Conceicao, with a contract until 30 June 2026.
Having arrived in the summer after his experience in France with Lille, Fonseca never got on well with the team, especially with the two stars Rafa Leao and Theo Hernandez. The club in turn hardly ever defended him publicly, often leaving him alone to explain disappointing results, especially in the league. In total, Fonseca only managed 12 wins in 24 matches in all competitions. Milan are eighth in Serie A, a good 14 points behind leaders Atalanta and Napoli, far worse than the second place they achieved under Stefano Pioli last season. However, the Rossoneri have done better in the Champions League, where they have scored four consecutive victories, including an important 3-1 win at home to Real Madrid.
The Rossoneri are in 12th place and on track to qualify for the playoffs. Fonseca's heir, Conceicao, has played in Serie A with Lazio, Parma and Inter and coached Porto for six seasons before resigning in June. He will be tasked with relaunching the Rossoneri's ambitions, starting with the clash against Juventus in the Italian Super Cup semi-final in Saudi Arabia on Friday.
