Milan: work begins on the redevelopment of the Central Station
The investment is worth 20 million and will make the area more functional
Work is set to begin on the redevelopment of Milan Station, funded by Grandi Stazioni Retail in collaboration with FS Sistemi Urbani. The project involves a total investment of 20 million and is set to redefine the accessibility, aesthetics and functionality of one of Italia’s most iconic infrastructure and architectural assets.
The new plan is being launched 120 years after work began on the current building, with the foundation stone laid in 1906. Today, the station serves 260,000 passengers every day.
“Today we are witnessing the launch of a strategic regeneration project for the city,” explains Giuseppe Sala, Mayor of Milan. “In recent years, the needs and travel habits of those arriving in Milan by train for work, study, leisure or tourism have changed significantly. For this reason, it is essential for the city’s future to adapt the functions and spaces of Central Station to travellers’ new needs, whilst respecting and enhancing the history – including the architectural heritage – of this iconic Milanese landmark, as this project aims to do.”
“The redevelopment of Milano Centrale station, a strategic piece of infrastructure for national and European transport, represents an investment in Milan’s future and in our cities’ ability to evolve,” says Matteo Colamussi, chief executive of FS Sistemi Urbani.
The architectural design – created by Park & Associati – was guided by a careful study of the original materials, carried out in collaboration with the Superintendence for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape.
