The place where he died has become a memorial that much of the city wants to preserve.
The anniversary falls just days after the Trump administration's Department of Justice decision to shelve investigations into several major police departments including Louisville and Minneapolis, which were under investigation for the killings of Breonna Taylor and Floyd.
The African-American was suffocated by a white policeman while attempting to arrest him.
The video of his death, shot by a bystander, shocked America. "I can't breathe... please... I can't breathe," Floyd can be heard pleading pinned to the ground and handcuffed, as an officer forcibly presses a knee to his neck for nine minutes. Officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison.
