It has been about a month, since 15 April, that the tax authorities have been on the trail of Camila Giorgi, the 32-year-old tennis player who has confirmed via social media that she has retired from the WTA circuit, pointing out, however, that the news concerning her for anything but sporting reasons is 'fake'. At the moment, however, all traces of her have been lost, and she may be in the USA, but the tax assessments are running so fast that 'the Agenzia delle Entrate has presented a distraint against the Federtennis' because Giorgi owes the tax authorities 464,000 euros for unpaid taxes. A piece of clarity in an affair the contours of which have yet to be defined and on which the Guardia di Finanza is also allegedly at work for a possible judicial trail for evasion. The seizure formalised by the Inland Revenue does not exclude, in fact, that the Italian tennis player's debt to the tax authorities could be even greater.

Why the Federation is involved

The amount seized simply represents the tax bill passed on to Fitp. The federation is involved in the matter because it pays premiums and national team attendance fees to athletes. It will therefore have to turn over to the Inland Revenue any premiums not paid to Giorgi since the deed of attachment, i.e. since July 2023, or future ones, which however are not conceivable now as Giorgi has retired. The tennis player was reportedly acquitted in December 2023 by the court of Prato in proceedings for omitted income tax returns for the years 2013 and 2014, while other tax assessments are underway by the Florence Revenue Agency - in a separate proceeding - for a later period, 2015.

The IRS's allegations concern the income from her sporting activity. According to reports, Camila Giorgi is awaiting the filing of the judgement with motivations of the trial in which she was acquitted in Prato for her 2013 and 2014 income, a period in which she was always abroad and in which she allegedly did not file a tax return or move her tax residence. In those two years Giorgi was resident in the province of Como, then she moved to Tuscany between Pisa and Livorno, then since 2016 she has been resident in Calenzano (Florence). For the years 2015 and possibly also 2016, the IRS would have already made other assessments on her tax returns, notifying her of the results. The Guardia di Finanza was trying to serve her a notice of conclusion of investigation by the Prato Public Prosecutor's Office for the charge of omitted tax returns in 2016 and consequent tax evasion.

On her social profile, the tennis player, who reportedly earned around €6 million in her career, thanked the fans who followed her throughout her suddenly interrupted career. "I am so grateful for your wonderful love and support for so many years. I cherish all the wonderful memories,' she wrote on Instagram and then added that 'there have been many inaccurate rumours about my future plans, so I look forward to providing more information about the exciting opportunities ahead. It is a joy to share my life with you and let's continue this journey together."

The lawyers: Camila will return to Italy soon

.

'No intention to shirk responsibility, Camila will return to Italy soon'. This was stated by Camila Giorgi's lawyers Federico Marini and Cristian Carmelo Nicotra in a note. "The removal from the residence in Calenzano is temporary and due to a divergence of views within the family, and to the desire to take a pause for reflection to decide how to set up her life after the abandonment of competitive activity," they explain, adding that Camila's withdrawal from competitive competitions has nothing to do with the affair linked to the GdF investigations.

Disappearance from Calenzano

Meanwhile, in Calenzano, a town in the province of Florence where she lived with her family, there has been no trace of her for days. "Here it is not that we have ever seen her much, it has always been rare to see her around the village," mayor Riccardo Prestini cuts in. "Her commitments have always taken her far away. Even I as mayor in five years will have seen her maybe twice. Once for an award we gave her in the town hall, another time she came to the town hall for a matter, as a citizen, in 2023. Formally she is still our resident'. Camila's family moved to the industrial town between Florence and Prato for work reasons.

'As far as we know they have activities in the ready-to-wear and clothing industry,' he adds. "We all know that when she was younger Camila also trained at a local sports centre, then with professionalism she left it. The needs of the sport practised at high levels led her to choose other training methods, in addition to travelling from one part of the world to another to play tournaments'. For days now, there has been no movement at the house, a two-storey cottage in a recently built area. The neighbours have the feeling that the parents have also left, but no one would swear to that.

Another grievance involving the tennis player is the indictment request for her and other suspects, in Vicenza, for false certification of anti-Covid vaccines. She defended herself by saying she was calm as she would not have been able to participate in tournaments if she had not complied with the vaccination. Having achieved a prestigious Wta ranking in her career, she was lately well over 100th position. What remains of her, however, is the glamour beyond sport, the same trail the IRS would be following to find out where she is.
