Mobility Fund, 590 million for the renewal of commercial vehicles

The Sustainable Mobility Fund for the renewal of the fleet of commercial vehicles in circulation is worth 590 million. The Mit measure covers the period from 2027 (100 million coverage) to 2031 and stems from the desire to reduce the environmental impact of commercial vehicles. The decree approved last October was published in the Official Gazette with the allocation of quotas year on year.

The measure is intended for the renewal of the vehicle fleet of haulage companies registered with the National Electronic Register (REN) and the National Roll of Hauliers. "This is an unprecedented measure in terms of the amount of resources," writes the MIT in a note, which refers "to the commitment made by Minister Salvini with the companies in the sector".

The aim is to support the transition towards more modern and efficient vehicles, supporting the latest generation of electric, hybrid or endothermic engines, 'guaranteeing a concrete and non-ideological approach, to the benefit of the entire supply chain'. Approximately 70% of circulating goods road transport vehicles belong to environmental classes below Euro 6, is the MIT analysis, and about half of these belong to environmental classes between Euro 0 and Euro 3. The MIT's conviction, therefore, is to use a portion of the Sustainable Mobility Strategy Fund for urgent interventions in favour of the road haulage sector, 'with specific reference to the renewal of the vehicle fleet'. A subsequent decree will take care of updating the criteria for distributing the residual availability of the same Fund.

The operational modalities for companies to submit fleet renewal programmes and access the incentives will be presented in the coming months. The measure comes at a historic phase of great suffering in the automotive sector, with registrations of commercial vehicles even more difficult than in the car sector itself. At the last Anfia assembly, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa issued an alert on the commercial sector, which risks losing up to 15% of its volumes this year.

"The allocation, of an extraordinary and multi-year nature, is a concrete signal that follows the 'road map for the decarbonisation of road freight transport', jointly presented by the associations to the Ministry of Transport on the occasion of Ecomondo 2023," write the main associations in the sector, from Anfia to Unrae to Federauto, alongside Anita and Unatrans, the transport sector unions.
