Snack giant Mondelēz International is celebrating 40 years of its Capriata d'Orba plant in Piedmont, one of two production hubs in Italy. In the last 10 years, about 50 million euros have been invested in the factory where historical products such as Oro Saiwa are created. A similar amount, is the commitment of Silvia Bagliani, president and managing director of Mondelēz Italia, will be committed over the next decade. "Mondelez," explains the Group's number one in Italy, "has adopted a structured investment plan, in which Capriata is involved, on the progressive replacement of the current gas ovens with more innovative solutions with a reduced environmental impact. Capriata d'Orba will continue to be a strategic and avant-garde production pole, strengthening its role as a key hub in the group's European production system, making it one of the main hubs for the production of baked biscuits and snacks".

The history of the plant in the Alessandria area is linked to the Saiwa brand, part of the Mondelēz International Group since 2007. Over the years, the site has doubled its production capacity (from 20 thousand to 40 thousand tonnes per year), increased its workforce to over 300 employees and expanded its portfolio to include brands such as Tuc, Cipster, Ritz and Premium. Today, Capriata d'Orba is one of Mondelēz International's best-performing industrial companies at a European level, with 30% of its production destined for export.

In Italy, the turnover in 2024 was more than one billion euro. In the country, the multinational has around 900 employees between the administrative offices in Milan, the sales network and the two production plants in Piedmont, Caramagna Piemonte and Capriata d'Orba. "Italy is a virtuous example of a portfolio that combines global brands, such as Oreo or Philadelphia, with unique and distinctive local brands, such as Oro Saiwa and Fattorie Osella, which are an integral part of the country's heritage and food culture," explains Bagliani.

Mondelēz International is a world reference in the snacking sector, present in over 150 countries worldwide. "In Italy Mondelēz - adds the CEO - generates a significant economic impact, contributing to the development of the country with more than 510 million euros of value distributed throughout the territory, supporting more than 6,700 direct and indirect jobs. This demonstrates how Italy is a strategic market for the sustainable growth of the entire group, combining local expertise with the strength of an international network".

The production plants in Piedmont, in particular, have a decisive weight in Mondelēz Italia's industrial strategy, with a value generated and distributed over the territory of about 100 million euros and an overall employment impact of about 1,400 employees, of which 449 direct and 910 indirect. In Capriata d'Orba, in particular, 100% Italian wheat is used, mainly from Piedmont. While in Caramagna Piemonte, for the production of cheeses such as Fattorie Osella, milk from producers within a 50-kilometre radius of the dairy is used, thus supporting the regional dairy chain. "This integration with the territory makes it possible to enhance local agricultural excellence, guaranteeing quality, traceability and the profitability of farming communities," adds the CEO.
