Russian cargo ship Sparta IV monitored for suspicious movements off Sardinia
The ship is making an unusual comings and goings in Sardinian waters, causing concern and surveillance by NATO and the Italian Navy.
It has been sailing for several hours up and down eastern Sardinia the Russian cargo Sparta IV, which appeared to be heading towards Gibraltar.
According to L'Unionesarda.it, the vessel is part of the flotilla that was spotted in the Mediterranean by NATO in mid-January while being escorted by the Russian Navy's destroyer, Severomorsk, along with the Mys Zhelaniya.
In recent days, the same cargo ship had also been monitored by the Italian Navy's missile frigate 'Virginio Fasan'.
The movements of the Sparta IV, already known to be a so-called 'ghost ship' used for particularly sensitive cargo - L'Unionesarda.it also reports - have attracted attention.
"The current behaviour of the Sparta IV deviates from the declared or assumed route," explains the specialised website Itamilradar. The pendulum movement undertaken since yesterday evening is not typical of commercial traffic and suggests an intentional coming and going rather than a navigational necessity'.
