'Increasing synergies between exhibition centres is a necessity that we can no longer postpone. We must be united in order to enhance the national trade fair system, which in fact means enhancing the Italian production sectors, and compare ourselves with international competitors". Giovanni Bozzetti has been president of Fondazione Fiera Milano - Fiera Milano's main shareholder - since 1 August last, and among the objectives of his mandate, he has put dialogue with the territory and all its stakeholders at the top of the list, as well as the unity of the trade fair sector.

For years we have been talking about making a system between trade fairs in Italy. Some progress has been made, but often the logic of parochialism still seems to prevail. Why?

Unfortunately, in Italy a wrong cultural approach still often prevails in all spheres, which follows corporatism logics. We must overturn this paradigm and replace it with the idea that united, each obviously with its own territorial and commercial prerogatives, we are more attractive to foreign economic operators and strengthen our ability to compete outside national borders. Unity does not cancel out specificities but, on the contrary, even enhances them. This is why we have already begun talks with some major national trade fairs to evaluate possible collaborations and we have participated in a round table in the Lombardy Region, promoted by the Councillor for Economic Development Guido Guidesi, to discuss with the entire Lombardy trade fair system.

In concrete terms, what kind of synergies and collaborations do you propose?

I believe it is important to work together in two directions: on the one hand, to create joint trade fair products, on production sectors of excellence of made in Italy, to be presented abroad. On the other hand, to create, in Italy, what I call 'widespread fairs'. For example: abroad there are already some international trade fair champions in the construction sector. We, in Italy, have three important events that are somehow related to this industrial chain: Cersaie in Bologna, Marmomac in Verona and Made in Milan. We could try to schedule these three events in the same period, so that Italy can be presented abroad as the showcase of the construction sector in that particular period, so that foreign buyers are not forced to choose between one or the other, but can visit all three. There are many other examples, in different sectors.

Even in representation we need unity?

Yes, and in fact in the direction of greater compactness and unity of the system also goes the initiative, now almost in the pipeline, to reunify the two trade associations representing the system, Aefi and IT-EX. The existence of two entities is a mistake, in my opinion, in a logic of the country system: united we have greater strength, both vis-à-vis Italian institutions and abroad. Abroad we should all wear the same jersey, that of the Italian national team, in order to face the competition which, in some countries, also takes the form of dumping. But the Italian trade fair system is fragmented and small. It is worth 1.4 billion euro, very little compared to the German one, which is worth 4. Yet in Italy we have everything we need to be attractive: creativity, technology, the beauty of products and landscapes, food and wine, art, culture. We must shift our attention to the international front. Competition is played out there, while within national borders we must work together and be coordinated. For me the priority is to attract foreign buyers to Italy, to promote together Made in Italy and Italy as a destination. Trade fairs are in fact, according to 80% of the companies that participate in them, a key driver for exports.

One of your priorities is dialogue with the territory: what are you doing in this direction?

I have initiated a series of tables that are first and foremost moments of dialogue, but also opportunities to propose concrete solutions to the critical issues related to the fairs, from mobility to the cost of accommodation. I have already met with several categories, including merchants, hoteliers, industrialists, and protagonists from the world of culture, with whom we have started working on a shared calendar of all the cultural events taking place in the city, to which we could perhaps combine food and wine initiatives. The basic idea is to create projects and initiatives through which I enhance both my proposal as a fair and the excellence of the territory. The response has been very positive. The next meetings will include one with the universities, a very important topic for us at Fondazione Fiera Milano, which for years has been promoting courses and masters through our Academy, which offers the only post-university master's degree to train professionals in the trade fair sector. Young people are our future, so training is fundamental for us.
