The King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, announced on 24 April 2025 a railway expansion plan worth 96 billion dirhams ($10.3 billion), including the construction of a high-speed line in Marrakech, the country's main tourist centre, by 2030,
Morocco's preparation for hosting the 2030 World Cup together with Spain and Portugal has stimulated the extension of high-speed, intercity and urban rail networks.
The high-speed line, worth 53 billion dirhams, will start from Kenitra on the Atlantic coast and run 430 kilometres south to Marrakesh, reaching Rabat and Casablanca along the way.
The line will reduce the journey time between Marrakech and Tangier by two hours, to 2 hours and 40 minutes, while travel time between Rabat and Casablanca's main airport will be reduced to 35 minutes.
The Oncf (Office national des chemins de fer, the national rail operator in Morocco) announced in February that it had signed agreements to purchase 168 trains from France, Spain and South Korea for 29 billion dirhams.
