The two-wheeler sector in Italy is one of excellence, passion, innovation as well as sporting triumphs: motorcycling, in particular, has been a driving market in recent years, growing by 41% from 2020 to 2023. In order to enhance the sector, Ancma, the National Association of Bicycle, Motorcycle and Accessory Manufacturers, is presenting the most detailed analysis possible of the Italian supply chain with a study conducted by Bain & Company Italia on a sample of over 2100 companies representing more than 80% of the entire sector.
Motorcycle industry turnover 9.5 billion in 2023
As is well known, the association represents at national level 90% of the operators in a sector that is worth 14.8 billion Euro in total turnover 2023. The study shows that the motorbike sector alone is credited with a turnover of 9.5 billion euros, confirming its leading position in Europe in terms of both production and market numbers. Motorbikes, scooters and mopeds, in short, appeal more and more to Italians, and the numbers confirm this.
One in five of the licences issued are A
.The number of A licences is growing: today they account for one in five of those issued, for a total of 280,000, +6% from 2013 to 2023 compared to +1% for B licences, and the market is also doing very well, with an average annual growth rate of no less than 12% from 2020 to 2023. The post-Covid period has granted motorised two-wheelers a new leading role, both in urban mobility with scooters, but also in use more related to tourism and leisure.
Great success among medium-sized motorcycles
.So much so that motorbikes came to account for as much as 45% of registrations in 2023, it was 34% only 10 years earlier, and that, thanks to the success of medium-sized engines, they went on to meet the demand for commuting and new mobility requirements. The positive market trend has also translated into a growth in turnover for the entire sector, which between 2020 and 2023 has increased by 50% and average profitability for operators has risen from 4.2% to 6% over the last three years.
Positive motorbike trade balance
It is no coincidence that the number of employees, which grew by 7% between 2020 and 2022, stood at more than 36 thousand direct and 84 thousand including indirect and induced. Worthy of note, finally, is the balance of trade for motorbikes that closed in 2023 with + 470 million euros, confirming the quality and central role of Italy in exports. There is also a trend for component leadership in the top range, with an export value of 33 euros per kg compared to 19 for imports.
