When asked about possible counter-moves by Luigi Lovaglio, Papa remained non-committal: ‘I don’t know; I don’t have a crystal ball yet.’ In any case, if everything goes smoothly, BPER could take over the Rocca Salimbeni branches – “I think in 2028, though that’s just a rough estimate. Taking into account the authorisations we’d need to apply for, I reckon we’ll get there in 2028 – partly based on an interview Messina gave, in which he spoke of the second half of ’27 as the transition to Unipol.”

But will BPER, in the meantime, continue to look around the board in this game of Risk? “There’s nothing left,” smiles Papa.
