Elon Musk enters the American political arena in a big way: on the strength of the results of the online poll, he announces the birth of a third party, the America Party: "Born to give you back your freedom," he tweets on X. The turning point comes after the approval in Congress of the "Big beautiful bill", the budget strongly advocated by the president and his former ally Donald Trump and equally strongly criticised by Musk.
The risk of bankruptcy for the country
Signing the measure at the White House, the president heaped praise on it: 'He's able to launch the Golden Age,' he said with satisfaction surrounded by congressional Republicans at the White House. To a user on X who asked him why he had gone from loving "The Donald" to criticising him, Musk replied: "An increase in the deficit from an already insane $2 trillion under Biden to $2.5 trillion. That will bankrupt the country."
The Independence Day poll
.When by now his role as First Buddy appears to be a distant memory given his public clashes with Trump, the billionaire his political creature. On 4 July, Independence Day, the Tesla patron had in fact launched an online poll to ask Americans whether they wanted 'independence' from a two-party system. 65% answered yes, 35% no. The patron of Tesla has never hidden his opposition to the 'big beautiful bill', a measure that he sees as capable of bankrupting the United States, going so far as to threaten all those in Congress who voted for it. "You will lose the election, even if it is the last thing I do," he assured.
The exchange of accusations
.Trump bluntly dismissed the criticism: 'He is angry about the subsidies for electric cars', he repeatedly went so far as to threaten to deport him. Relations between the two have been strained for some time, ever since Musk left the White House, breaking off a bromance that had lasted almost a year and had contributed millions of dollars to get Trump into the White House. In June, at the height of tensions, Musk had already raised the possibility of founding a new party that truly had the interests of Americans at heart.
The turning point of the 'Big beautiful bill"
.His anger, however, mounted over the weeks with the Senate and House giving the green light to the 940-page budget containing all the president's campaign promises, from tax cuts to new funds to fight immigration. On the measure the first friction arose between Trump and Musk. Then it was a crescendo that led to the final provocation: the birth of a new party that, in the billionaire's dreams, is able to attract those Republicans and Democrats who are frustrated and looking for something new to protect them.
