Iraq said on Tuesday morning that several sites and military bases belonging to the country's security forces were targeted by drones that significantly damaged two army radar systems and triggered a request by the prime minister to launch an investigation into the incident.

The news reported by the international agency Reterus was also picked up and relayed by the Italian media, in particular during the Radio3 programme dedicated to the truce in the war between Israel and Iran.

The origin of the drones was not clarified pending the results of the investigation, but two security sources said the drones were small in size and had been flown from nearby locations to the targeted sites. The two severely damaged army radar systems were located at Camp Taji, north of Baghdad, and at the Imam Ali base in Dhi Qar province in southern Iraq, Iraqi military spokesman Sabah al-Numan said in a statement.

Iraqi forces successfully repelled other attack attempts on four other sites in different locations before the drones could reach their targets. No casualties were reported, the spokesman said.

The statement said that all targeted sites were fully managed and administered by Iraqi security forces.

The Iraqi Prime Minister ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the attack, the spokesman said.
