The Naples metro has an important new facility. The Municipality of Naples and the concessionaire Hitachi Rail have signed the contract for the construction of the new Line 6 depot and Campegna station, a key element in ensuring the full functionality of the line already built and its extension to Bagnoli and Posillipo. The work is worth EUR 630 million.
The new train depot, which will be used for maintenance and parking of trains, includes an operations and technology hub. This infrastructure is crucial for guaranteeing high service quality standards and increasing frequencies up to 4.5 minutes, significantly improving urban mobility. The depot will cover an area of approximately 110,000 square metres in the area adjacent to the Campi Flegrei FS station and will include several buildings, including a new traffic control room for the underground line.
More generally, this is a major urban regeneration project The agreement in fact envisages urban redevelopment and rewiring of the areas affected by the works, with a project oriented towards sustainability thanks to the use of innovative materials, advanced technologies and energy-efficient installations.
Completing the plan is the construction of the new 'Campegna' station, which will connect the Bagnoli district, the western part of the city and a densely populated area, to line 6 and, through it, to line 1. All this should be completed in just over seven years. The planned works, together with the fleet of 22 new trains under construction at the Hitachi Rail factories, represent the final phase of the concession for Line 6, which will thus reach the final configuration envisaged in the Municipal Transport Plan.
The work will be carried out in two phases: a first one, immediately realisable through existing funding, approximately 325 million between funds from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Development and Cohesion, with which it will be possible to build the connection to the Mostra and Officina station; a second phase for which the municipality has already requested funding from the ministry.
