NATO: Meloni says Italia’s spending commitment stands at 2.8 per cent of GDP, up 0.71 per cent year-on-year
We will honour our spending commitments, but we will decide how to do so
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - “As I reiterated in Parliament, Italia attended this summit with 2.8 per cent of its gross domestic product invested in defence and security, representing an increase of 0.71 per cent compared with the previous year, an increase that reflects this broader conception of national security and strategic resilience because we clearly want to honour our commitments – we will do so and are already doing so – but we also want to do so in a sustainable manner, that is, by setting our own timetable, determining the methods and establishing priorities based on the context and our capabilities.” Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made these remarks during a press briefing on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara. “We are convinced,” added Meloni, “that it is, however, absolutely necessary to do so, particularly at a time like this. It is time for Europe to guarantee its own security on its own – not to do anyone a favour, but so as not to depend on anyone – and therefore it is a matter of sovereignty even before it is a matter of defence.”
