NetZero, focus on decarbonisation of strategic sectors

The new Summit at Fiera Milano from 14 to 16 May. Roland Berger research: priority for steel, cement and aviation generating 13% of GDP and 17% of emissions

The ambitious goal of zero net emissions by 2050 poses two enormous challenges for Europe: not only the decarbonisation of entire production sectors and services, already not easy in itself due to the technological innovations it requires, but also the achievement of this goal while maintaining the competitiveness of the European industrial system.

This challenge is all the more complex and urgent for the so-called 'hard-to-abate' sectors, i.e. those with the greatest difficulties in reducing emissions, as well as the most energy-intensive transport, such as aviation.

NetZero Summit, 14-16 May

It is precisely on these topics that the meetings scheduled within the first edition of NetZero Milan, Fiera Milano's Expo Summit dedicated to decarbonisation, which will make its debut from 14 to 16 May 2025 in the Mico Congress Centre, will focus. A new platform designed precisely to respond to the growing needs of industry to find tools and solutions to address the green transition. The event is also part of the development strategy of Fiera Milano itself, which has included the theme of sustainability in second place among the priorities envisaged by the 2024-2027 Industrial Plan, as mentioned by CEO Francesco Conci.

At the Summit, a research study by Roland Berger (partner of the event) will be presented, focusing precisely on three of the sectors generating the largest volume of emissions: cement, steel and aviation. Three sectors that are strategic for the global economy but which, together, account for 17% of the industry's total emissions and on which most attention and investment in decarbonisation is therefore focused.

"The transition towards a zero-emission industrial future requires much more than just technological advancement: it implies a paradigm shift that entails rethinking processes, the deployment of adequate financial resources, and, above all, solid collaboration between industrial leaders, political decision-makers, and the scientific community," says Roberto Foresti, deputy general manager of Fiera Milano. "Coordinated efforts are needed to create supportive regulatory frameworks and to encourage investment in research, innovation, and infrastructural development. It is precisely with this conviction that we are preparing for NetZero Milan, where the International Summit and the rich agenda of conferences will allow us to discuss common strategies to accelerate a decisive process for the competitiveness of European industry'.

Hard-to-abate: concrete, steel and aviation

In detail, the cement industry is responsible for about 6% of global CO₂ emissions, the steel industry for about 7%, and civil aviation for about 4%. The centrality of these sectors to the economy makes their decarbonisation not only a priority for the future of the planet and new generations, but also a necessity to ensure Europe's economic development and competitiveness.

As the Roland Berger study reminds us, in fact, the cement and steel sectors together account for almost 10 per cent of the world's GDP and are worth about USD 10 trillion. The investments planned for the decarbonisation of processes at European level are substantial: a total of almost USD 54 billion is estimated. However, most of these funds have yet to be put into practice.

On the other hand, in the aviation sector, which generates 2-3% of global CO2 emissions and around 4% of total greenhouse gases, the green transition is to be achieved through two main levers: the introduction of sustainable fuels (Saf) and technological innovation in the propulsion sector.

Public-private synergy for investment

One of the central issues in the decarbonisation debate is the business model innovation needed to make the transition. Business commitment is not sufficient to reach the 2050 targets without adequate public policies. Currently, only 24% of greenhouse gas emissions globally are regulated by carbon taxation systems or Emission Trading Schemes (ETS). Huge initials, scalability, new infrastructure and a favourable regulatory framework are also needed, Roland Berger analysts explain, with public-private synergy essential to stimulate research, development and deployment of sustainable solutions.
