Tajani: “Trump’s words speak for themselves.” Crosetto: “People come and go, but our relations with the US must endure.”

Following the latest attack by US President Donald Trump against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni – in which the tycoon posted a meme on Truth showing the Prime Minister looking at him, accompanied by the caption ‘she needs a restraining order’, the first comments from several members of the Meloni government emerged this morning. No comment, however, from the Prime Minister. It was reiterated that the differences between the leaders do not (and must not) affect relations between the two countries, which remain fundamentally and traditionally strong.

Following Trump’s latest attack on Giorgia Meloni, “I had no reaction; the key thing is to maintain relations with a key ally such as the US”. This was stated by Defence Minister Guido Crosetto during a live broadcast on Sky Tg24 Live In. “People come and go, but relations” with allies “must endure; I didn’t give it a second thought and turned my attention elsewhere,” he concluded.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told Sky Tg24 that Trump’s remarks “speak for themselves. We have said from the outset that we would not respond to statements of this kind, so we are moving on. We are convinced that transatlantic relations go far beyond individual statements. We are friends with the United States, which is a strategic partner and, alongside Europe, the most important part of the West; this is what matters to us. Relations with the United States are fundamental from every point of view – commercial, political and strategic. We have been allies of the United States under Obama, Clinton, Bush, Reagan and Biden; so for us, there is no problem – we are moving forward, continuing to build on these very important political relations, regardless of a few statements.”

A similar statement was made by the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi. Speaking on Sky Tg24 Live In, the head of the Ministry of the Interior said: “I believe we must focus on the fact that, as we have seen, relations with the United States are unshakeable and are not called into question even by these fluctuations, the nature of which is still unclear”.

Reactions have also come from the opposition. “We were the first to say that these attacks are unacceptable, even for the opposition: we are all Italians and we cannot accept attacks, threats or insults from foreign leaders,” said the secretary of the PD Elly Schlein on Live in on Skytg24. As for Meloni? “We must always hold our heads high; this aggression on Trump’s part is nothing new, and we are not giving up on our relationship with the US” because of him, but “we must demand mutual respect; that is why we need a stronger and more integrated EU – only then will we be able to respond to this aggression and compete in the field of AI as well”, he added.
