New Audi TT electric, everything we know about the new battery-powered sports car

It is one of the most eagerly awaited novelties at the Munich Motor Show (9-14 September) where, however, it will still make its debut as a concept car. One of the Four Rings brand's most iconic models is back with battery power.

The TT will return to the market in an electric version in the course of 2027. It was given up for dead in November 2023 when Audi decided to cease production after 25 years at its Gyor factory in Hungary. Instead, five years later, the coupé that became iconic and fashionable in the 1990s, before the RS sports variants turned it into a de facto sports model, will return to the market with completely new styling unveiled at the IAA 2025.

New electric Audi TT, will be a response to Chinese aggression

The legacy of the TT acronym on a new model brought up to date can be useful at a time when the historical European brands and, therefore, also Audi have to face the aggressiveness of Chinese brands. Hence the decision to include it in the medium-term plan, recently confirmed also by the brand's highest levels. TT is in Audi's DNA and the right way has been found to integrate the new electric into the upcoming sports car portfolio.

What technology the electric TT will use

It is well known that within the Vw group, the Porsche brand is working on a project called C-Sport that will debut electric variants of the 718 Cayman and Boxster in 2026 on the new scalable electric system platform (SSP) that Audi could use for the new TT. The rear components and all-wheel drive could also be a sporty basis for the TT's successor, unless Audi plans to make it a four-seater GT car.

New electric Audi TT, up to 1,000 hp and 800 volt architecture

Audi, they say from Ingolstadt, will never lack for performance. The SSP platform, not surprisingly, can accommodate a mix of electric motors for power up to 1,000 hp. The new-generation TT will also have an 800 volt architecture that will guarantee super-fast recharging, for an assumed range of around 700 km. Not to mention that the battery-powered TT will be one of the lightest SSP-based models in production in the coming years.

New electric Audi TT, the new style set to set trends

Technology aside, it is the styling that will have to be a plus for a project, that of the new electric TT, which is nothing short of futuristic. The challenge has fallen to an Italian, Massimo Frascella the brand's new creative director, 12 years after Walter de Silva, formerly of JLR where he played a key role in shaping the modernist look of Range Rover, as well as laying the foundations of Jaguar's electric styling. It is he who will put his hand to the Audi aesthetic revolution, from the TT onwards.

New electric Audi TT, minimalist vision of car design

Frascella, who joined Audi more or less a year ago, has had time to get up close and personal with the original TT and, thus, take inspiration for the new electric sports car. Known for his minimalist vision in car design, Frascella aims to optimise as much as possible, but also to eliminate everything that is not needed. A talent, they say at Audi, for working with as little as possible to get as much as possible. This will be seen in the concept at the IAA in Munich.

New electric Audi TT, competition and a list price hypothesis

The market for electric sports cars is not yet completely saturated, quite the contrary. The new TT's rivals will come, above all, from within the Volkswagen group. Starting with the two Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster, as well as the future battery-powered Vw Golf. All will use hitech software developed together with American electric car pioneers, the start-up Rivian. Finally, the electric TT could cost less than the Porsche models, but more than the new battery-powered Golf.
