The Aygo X was the only Toyota model on sale in Europe not to offer a hybrid version, which for the Japanese brand that invented two-source propulsion technology seemed almost a heresy. In Brussels, Toyota's European headquarters, in order to fill the gap, in addition to hybridisation, they have put their hands on a level restyling as well as the availability for the first time of the GR Sport version, like all Toyota docs. In short, it is a completely different Aygo X.
When it hits the market at the end of the year the new Aygo X Hybrid will use the same two-source engine already available on both the Yaris and Yaris Cross, replacing the current 1,000 cc petrol unit with the 1,500 cc three-cylinder unit. The new packaging will not affect the car's wheelbase, which remains at 2,430 mm, while the width is 3.78 metres, slightly more than the current model, and the boot space also remains unchanged. To accommodate the larger hybrid powertrain, the front overhang has been lengthened by a further 76 mm.
The power of the full hybrid system brings an increase of 44 hp, compared to the current non-hybrid unit, to 116 hp, guaranteeing a 0-100 km/h in less than 10 seconds. Added to this are CO2 emissions of 86 g/km, the lowest of all non-plug-in vehicles currently on the market. In addition, the positioning of the hybrid battery ensures a low centre of gravity and a more rigid structure. The turning radius of 4.7 metres, then, is ideal in tight spaces.
If the full hybrid is a guarantee of more responsive driving, quietness is improved with additional soundproofing components: bonnet and dashboard insulation, plus underbody cover are combined with an updated exhaust system and silencer. Safety is the other priority for the new Aygo X, which adds an emergency stop system. It also debuts over-the-air upgrades to offer the latest protection solutions.
In terms of restyling, the main novelty is concentrated in the front design. It features a new bonnet, headlights and a new front grille, while the set-up is enhanced by 17 or inch wheels and black wheel arches. The two-tone black roof complete the exclusive styling of the new Aygo X. Despite the compact dimensions of the SUV, there is plenty of interior space for everyone. The only four seats available are comfortable and the boot confirms its 232 litre capacity.
