China's stock exchanges have launched a new blue-chip index to stimulate investment in listings deemed strategically important to Beijing. According to investors and analysts, the Csi A50 index, which debuted on Tuesday, 2 January, is intended to stimulate the creation of investment products that ensure a greater weighting of sectors such as renewable energy and semiconductor manufacturing, areas central to policymakers' vision for economic transition and national security.

The new index

.

The introduction of the new index follows a prolonged sell-off in Chinese equities that resulted in record outflows of foreign money and left the Csi 300 index of Shanghai and Shenzhen-listed stocks down more than 11% in 2023 due to disappointing economic growth. In comparison, the S&P 500 rose more than 24% over the same period.

The Shanghai stock exchange, which jointly owns the China Securities Index Company with its counterpart in Shenzhen, told state media this week that it will ensure that the index provider "enriches the stock index product pool, which will be exploited to show the shift in China's economic structure."

Listed Companies

.

The main constituents of the Csi A50 include Kweichow Moutai, the world's most valuable liquor company, battery company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co, chip maker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp and Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals. The index's diversified focus contrasts with existing benchmarks that place little emphasis on new drivers of economic growth due to their weightings based primarily on market capitalisation.

The Analysts' Opinion

.

According to the Financial Times website, analysts said foreign and institutional investors in China tended to focus on the Csi 300, which favoured financial stocks, while retail traders usually kept an eye on the Shanghai Composite index, which weighed on finance and industry.
