“The Stranger”, family breakdown with a horror twist
Paolo Strippoli’s film, starring Jasmine Trinca and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, is now in cinemas
The film selected to represent Italia at the Oscars is the undisputed star of the weekend at the cinema: Paolo Strippoli’s *L’estranea* is hitting our cinemas following its screening in competition at the Venice Film Festival and its subsequent screening at the Toronto International Film Festival.
It will be difficult to make it into the shortlist of five nominees for the Best International Feature Film award, but it is a film that is generating a great deal of buzz, even internationally, and that can only be good for Italian (genre) cinema.
This is Strippoli’s fourth feature film; the director has always experimented with the horror genre, including in his previous works: *A Classic Horror Story* (2021, co-directed with Roberto De Feo), *Piove* (2022) and *La valle dei sorrisi* (2025).
With *The Stranger*, she has created a film that blends horror, fantasy and psychological thriller to depict a disturbing family breakdown: Anna turns up unannounced at her daughter Alice’s flat in Rome. She can wait no longer; she must confess a truth she has kept hidden for twenty years – a lie that has underpinned their entire family history and which is now crumbling under the weight of its consequences.
The woman reveals that she made a pact with a mysterious Stranger to save Alice’s life following a serious accident that occurred when she was a child: a pact which, like some sort of curse, has set in motion a long chain of dark and painful events.
