New Mazda CX-5, everything you need to know about the third generation

The result of a total redesign that has also taken care to renew, without distorting, the family look of the SUV that is one of the Japanese manufacturer's undisputed best-sellers, the third generation debuts with a mild hybrid engine that will later be joined by the brand's first full hybrid.

The model that launched the Japanese manufacturer into the world of suvs in 2012 is preparing to bring out its third generation, with which it aims to continue the successful run with which it is approaching a total production of 4.8 million units. No mean feat considering that Mazda in absolute terms is not a manufacturer of large numbers. The new series is a clear departure from its predecessor thanks to an almost total redesign and, if you like, it is also well conveyed by the growth in size that is very evident, as we saw at a private preview in Oberursel in Germany at the Japanese manufacturer's European R&D centre. The new CX-5 is on sale from 36,000 euros and will be available from December.

The new generation based on the evolution of the architecture of the previous series will repudiate turbodiesel engines and totally convert to petrol hybrids, among which in 2027 will be the first full-hybrid fully developed by Mazda, which will also open the e-Skyactiv Z. A proposal that will further broaden the range of technologies with which it approaches sustainable mobility. Meanwhile, from this multi-solution vision, the new CX-5 inherits the 24V mild-hybrid unit, a solution that is not very common in the automotive sector but consistent with the philosophy of creating for each model the solution that offers the best relationship between cost and result. Thus, under the bonnet of the new series is the 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G unit with 141 horsepower and 238 Nm (221 lb-ft) with deactivation of two of its four cylinders in certain driving situations combined with the six-speed automatic gearbox, which drives both the front-wheel drive version and the one with the revamped i-Activ all-wheel drive working in synergy with the torque vectoring system on the rear axle. Together with this engine, which is also used in the Mazda3 saloons and the CX-30 compact suv, the new series of the M-size suv benefits from a specific braking system, a newly designed set-up and steering to optimise dynamism and driveability. In terms of Adas, the new CX-5 offers everything needed for advanced level 2 semi-assisted driving.

Mazda CX-5, renewed look for continuity

With a length of 4.69 metres, 11 centimetres longer than its predecessor and 5 centimetres shorter than the sturdier CX-60, a width of 1.86 metres, a height of 1.69 metres, 3 centimetres longer than the version still on sale, and a wheelbase 11 centimetres longer, i.e. 2.81 metres, the new CX-5 has an authoritative but balanced appearance. The line inspired by the canons of Mazda's Kodo Design brought to debut by the first CX-5 does not detach itself with determination from that of the current model. The profile still features the volume of the recessed passenger compartment and the characteristic outline of the side windows in which the original design of the third light stands out, but it proposes new styling cues in the long front end, in the sides designed by concave and convex surfaces and in the sculptural rear part crossed by an unprecedented light signature, like the front one that skirts the large Mazda grille.

Mazda CX-5, minimalist, spacious and elegant interior

The CX-5's cabin offers plenty of space for all passengers thanks to its minimalist interior design and long wheelbase. A real stylistic revolution is concentrated in the cabin. In fact, the interior is somewhat inspired by that of the 6e electric sedan and, thus, is markedly different from that of the modern-day CX-5 thanks to its linear, minimalist and hi-tech design. The pleasing presentation is underpinned by the carefully crafted finish, the extensive use of quality upholstery and clever colour combinations specific to each trim level. These include Prime-Line, which is only available for the front-wheel drive version, Centre-Line, Exclusive-Line and Homura.

Digitisation rests on the configurable 10.25" cockpit, to which a large head-up display can be added, and the 12.9" or 15.6" central display, depending on trim level, of the integrated infotainment system with all Google services, including Ai Gemini that supports the voice assistant. The system allows remote control and management of the CX-5 via a Mazda app, but only offers wireless and non-cable connectivity for smartphones from the second trim level. The digitisation removes many physical controls from the dashboard and console but wisely leaves the climate controls in view. The width of the cabin does not affect that of the boot, whose capacity ranges from 583 to 2,019 litres.
