The collision between an Air Canada passenger plane and a fire engine on a runway at New York's LaGuardia Airport cost the lives of the pilot and co-pilot. Nbc News reported.
The Federal Aviation Administration (Faa) announced that the aircraft involved was a twin-engine Bombardier CRJ-900 and announced the closure of the airport due to 'an emergency'. The plane was arriving from Montreal and had reduced speed to about 38 km/h when it hit a vehicle belonging to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport.
The collision occurred on runway 4 at LaGuardia Airport late Sunday evening. A spokesman for the New York Fire Department said firefighters responded at 11.38pm (4.38am Monday in Italia) following a report of a plane having crashed into a vehicle on the runway.
Photos and videos from the crash site showed severe damage to the front of the plane, with cables and debris dangling from a completely destroyed cockpit. Nearby, a damaged rescue vehicle lay on its side.
The impact left the nose of the plane crumpled and tilted upwards.
