The city of New York has sued TikTok, Facebook and YouTube for damage to the mental health of children and teens. According to the lawsuit Meta, Snap, ByteDance and Google knowingly built and marketed their platforms to "attract, capture and create addiction in young people". The initiative recalls the lawsuit filed in 2022 in California.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, had anticipated the lawsuit in late January. "Over the past decade, we have seen how much the online world can expose our children to a continuous stream of harmful content and fuel the national youth mental health crisis," the first citizen said in a note.
In addition to the City of New York, the plaintiffs also include the school district and health care institutions, alleging that the owner companies "knowingly designed, developed, manufactured, operated, promoted, distributed, and marketed their platforms to attract and create addiction, with minimal parental supervision."
