Born in 1974, a tourism manager, Antonio Nicoletti is the new mayor of Matera. Nominated by the centre-right, and in particular by Fratelli d'Italia, that of the 2025 municipal elections, at 51, was his first venture into politics. From 2019 to last January, he served as general director of the Basilicata Territorial Promotion Agency (Apt). A few months ago, however, he was at the head of the Matera Basilicata 2019 Foundation, when the city of the Sassi was European Capital of Culture.

.Next year, 2026, as mayor, he will lead Matera's city hall in the year of the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue. 'For over twenty-five years,' he wrote in the biography that accompanied his candidature for first citizen, 'I have been involved in sustainable development, innovation and the enhancement of cultural, environmental and creative resources. An engineer, I have a PhD in Planning. I have international experience that has allowed me to open Matera and Basilicata to new markets and opportunities'.

.With the Apt, Nicoletti explains that he has brought 'innovation to the heart of Lucanian tourism: with artificial intelligence, augmented reality, comics, video games, I have contributed to the growth of international tourism'.
