Nobel Peace Prize to María Corina Machado. The Committee: 'Trump? We follow the will of the founder'
The verdict of the Norwegian Nobel Committee dribbles out Trump's self-nomination and awards the prize to the opposition leader in Venezuela
Tutti guardavano a Washington, all’improbabile autocandidatura del presidente Usa Donald Trump.
"I'm in shock!" declared Machado in a video by the press team. According to the secretary of the Committee, echoed by the Guardian, Machado said: "This is an award for an entire movement.
A brave woman "Hasta el final"
Also known as the "Iron Lady" of Venezuela, a country since 2013 led by Maduro with his United Socialist Party, Machado is the embodiment of "resilience, tenacity, and patriotism", Marco Rubio called her in the issue of Time Magazine that included her name in the list of the 100 most influential people in the world for 2025. "Undeterred by formidable challenges, María Corina has never backed down from her mission, which is to fight for a free, honest, and democratic Venezuela," the US Secretary of State added.
His "guiding principle" has always been the same, "to leave his children, Ana Corina, Ricardo, Henrique, and the children of Venezuela a country free of tyranny", inspired by the phrase: "Hasta el final" ("Until the end", ed.). "His principled leadership is a beacon of hope, making our region and the world a better place." As in: the Nobel 2025 did not go to Trump, but this Nobel to Trump all things considered, he will not mind.
Born in Caracas in 1967 into a family of Venezuela's intellectual and business elite, founder of the liberal political party Vente Venezuela, she was a deputy in the National Assembly from 2011 to 2014. 'For the past 12 months, Machado has been forced to live in hiding. Despite serious threats to her life, she has remained in the country, a choice that has inspired millions,' said Frydnes. 'When authoritarians take power, it is crucial to recognise the brave defenders of freedom who stand up and resist,' she added.
