Somebody probably still has one in their memory drawer. It is the Nokia 3210, the best-selling phone, released just twenty-five years ago. A technological era ago, when SMS was the embryonic form of chat, connection was GSM, tariff plans were pay-as-you-go, and ringing was our cross and delight. The 3210 in particular had introduced some innovations that made its fortune: it was pocket-sized, with a built-in antenna, the T9 predictive texting system and integrated games (including the mythical 'snake'). An inexpensive and indestructible mobile phone that winked at young people, even being able to customise the ringtone and choose their favourite cover.
A quarter of a century after HDM Global, the manufacturer of Nokia products, is bringing the 3210 back to the shops with an updated version in step with the times. An operation that goes beyond the nostalgia effect, as the brand has already marketed its old glories, including the 8210, the 2660 flip, the 6300 and others. The aim is to offer devices that offer the essentials, emphasising the importance of prioritising authentic interactions.
The new 3210 has an almost identical design to its ancestor, but gets an upgrade with a 2.4-inch LCD colour display, a 2-megapixel camera on the back with flash and the 4G module to connect to the web and take advantage of applications in Lite versions including YouTube, the weather and the latest news. The internal memory is 128 MB (expandable with microSD) and there is a headphone jack, with the ability to play mp3 files and listen to FM radio. There is also Bluetooth 5.0, a type-c USB port and a (removable) 1450 mAh battery. The updated version of the Snake could not be missing either. The price of the Nokia 3210 4G is €79.9. The device can be purchased via HMD's official website.
