Non-profit sector: organisations and staff numbers are on the rise
The Istat figures for 2024, presented at the Bertinoro Conference on the Civil Economy, show there are 372,000 organisations
Key points
Almost 372,000 organisations, 938,000 employees and a dense network of relationships involving nine out of ten non-profit organisations. These are the findings from Istat data presented at the Bertinoro Conference on the Civil Economy.
Massimo Lori, a researcher at Istat, has provided an overview of the sector, presenting data from the Census of Non-Profit Organisations. In 2024, there were 372,384 active non-profit organisations in Italia, an increase of 0.5 per cent compared with 2023, whilst the number of employees stood at 938,152, representing a 2.8 per cent increase on the previous year.
Associations account for 85.2 per cent of non-profit organisations, whilst different trends are observed across the various legal categories: in particular, APSs and other categories of ETSs are growing, whilst social cooperatives, ASDs/SSDs, ONLUSs and social enterprises are declining. Although foundations account for just 2.5 per cent of the total, they have recorded an 8.6 per cent increase compared with 2023.
The biggest increase in the South
Non-profit organisations are more prevalent in the North and the Centre, whilst the South shows the strongest growth: in the South, the number of organisations has increased by 1.7 per cent compared with 2023.
In terms of employment, however, it is the Islands that have seen the most significant growth, with a 6.3 per cent rise in the number of employees.
