The countdown for the thirty-seventh America's Cup has begun: in just over two months, on 24 August, the Louis Vuitton Cup will officially start, the series of regattas that will be held between September and October and will decide who among the challengers will face the holders of the oldest trophy in the world, Emirates Team New Zealand, in New Zealand waters. But before moving on to Barcelona, where the Louis Vuitton Cup will be held, the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team made a stop in Venice.

The partnership with the UN agency

.

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and Unesco announced the launch of a new partnership aimed at spreading ocean conservation messages to the international America's Cup audience. The logos of Unesco and Sea Beyond, the project created in 2019 to promote ocean education to new generations, will be present on Luna Rossa's sails for the entire duration of the competition (photo above). The announcement took place on the opening day of the first Ocean Literacy World Conference , held in Venice on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 June), organised by Unesco and the Prada Group as part of Sea Beyond.

Sailors' involvement

.

"I am deeply proud to start this collaboration," explained Max Sirena, skipper and team director of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli (pictured below with Loreno Bertelli). Knowing that our team and our boat have been chosen to spread ocean education and protection of the marine environment globally alongside Unesco is a great honour and we will strive to be worthy of it". For Audrey Azoulay, Unesco's Director General, "through Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, it is the protection of the ocean that participates in the America's Cup. It is also a magnificent opportunity to strengthen the partnership between Unesco and the Prada Group for ocean education".

A complex programme active for years

.

The shared interest of Unesco and the Prada Group in ocean literacy is at the origin of the Sea Beyond programme, which over the years has flanked its educational activities with support for the dissemination of scientific research and the development of humanitarian projects, both related to sea conservation. "Knowing that Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli has been recognised by Unesco as an ambassador for the protection of the sea is a source of great pride for all of us," explained Lorenzo Bertelli, Executive Director of the Prada Group and Patron of the Ocean Decade Alliance. "As Patron of the Ocean Decade Alliance, I am personally committed to the launch of this synergy, which will help us spread knowledge and share our love of the sea.

Sailing's aid to data collection

.

The decision to enter into this partnership with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli is part of a long-term project by Unesco, which has focused on supporting and observing the ocean through sailing, also involving sailors in the Barcelona World Race, the Ocean Race and the Vendée Globe over the years.

Short Luna Rossa Story

Team Luna Rossa was born in 1997 from the meeting between entrepreneur Patrizio Bertelli and Argentine yacht designer German Frers, who proposed him to launch a challenge to the 30th America's Cup, the one held in 2000. Since then, the team has taken part in five editions of the America's Cup, winning the Challenger selection races twice - the Louis Vuitton Cup in 2000 and the Prada Cup in 2021 - and contesting the finals in 2007 and 2013. In the final match of the 36th America's Cup presented by Prada against the defender Emirates Team New Zealand, the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team recorded the best score by an Italian challenger in the history of the America's Cup.

The objectives of the Venice Conference

The main objective of the conference on 7 and 8 June - sponsored by the City of Venice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Third United Nations Ocean Conference to be held in Nice in June 2025 - was to bring together 131 delegates from Uneso member states and ocean literacy experts from around the world to contribute to the 'Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy', a collective document that in ten points encapsulates concrete recommendations to rebalance the relationship between ocean and human beings.

The Prada Lagoon Kindergarten as best practice

Participants of the first day shared best practices and future perspectives to formulate policies and strategies to integrate ocean literacy within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (in particular, Sustainable Development Goal No. 14) and the United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), including the definition of a common pathway to include ocean literacy in school curricula. The first day of work ended with the presentation of the documentary dedicated to one of the projects within Sea Beyond, the Lagoon Kindergarten, at the Cinema Rossini in Venice. The documentary recounts the experience of a Venetian school involved in the project, which offers pre-school children the opportunity to closely understand and love the lagoon ecosystem through outdoor education.

The final declaration

.

The second day of the first United Nations conference dedicated to ocean literacy, Ocean Literacy World Conference, opened with the signing of the Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy in Action. The goal of the Declaration is to catalyse a new wave of action to establish ocean literacy in the spheres of education, science, politics, economics and culture. By expanding humanity's understanding of the ocean, ocean literacy will enable communities to respect the marine environment and preserve ocean cultures around the world. "Today is an important day, marked by the ten points of the Venice Declaration, which we hope will fuel the debate on the importance of ocean education and the need for action, and carry us with enthusiasm and positive spirit to the next conference in Nice," commented Lorenzo Bertelli.
