Starting next year, Nutella Biscuits will also be produced in Canada, in the production plant in Brantford (Ontario). This is the first time that the production of the famous biscuit from Alba crosses the Italian border: until now, the only hub for production has been the one in Balvano, in the province of Potenza. To expand the production plant in Brantford, the company has grounded a 445 million Canadian dollar (283.3 million euro) investment.

Taking advantage of the Internet of Things (IoT) and advanced robotics to digitise production, the new lines set up within the plant (which will be expanded by an additional 8,400 square metres) will enable the production not only of the famous biscuits (already sold in the North American country), but also Ferero Rocher Chocolate Squares. The latter represent a novelty for the Canadian market, although Ferrero has not specified when they will be launched.

A note issued by the Ontario government also states that theprovince will contribute C$36 million to Ferrero's investment through the Invest Ontario Fund.

The expansion will generate 500 new jobs once completed, bringing the company's workforce at the plant to over 1,800 full-time employees. Ferrero has been an integral part of Ontario's manufacturing sector for nearly two decades, and the announced expansion is a strong signal to the local government that they have confidence in the province's local farmers, suppliers and manufacturers, given their firm commitment to source key ingredients and packaging materials in the area.

"This transaction represents a commitment to Ferrero's enormous momentum in the region and will strengthen our manufacturing capabilities and supply chain," said Omar Zausa, President of Ferrero's Canadian operations.

In turn, Italian Ambassador to Canada, Alessandro Cattaneo, remarked that Ferrero's investment represents a great example of the success of Made in Italy, which in Canada is combined with a highly skilled workforce and the availability of quality local raw materials. The decision is also in line with the inclusion of Canada in the Export Plan recently launched by the Vice-President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, in order to strengthen the Italian presence in some key markets and responds to the trade diversification strategy adopted by Canada.
