Nyt: 'Trump used the presidency to personally earn $1.4bn'
The New York Times investigation reconstructs all ascertainable transactions in favour of 'The Donald'. Between deals, donations and cryptocurrencies
US President Donald Trump's second term in office has been characterised by deals, donations and transactions in cryptocurrencies that have enabled him and his family to amass at least$1.4 billion, and the figure continues to rise. This was revealed in an investigation by the New York Times editorial board that has just been released.
According to the US journalists' reconstruction, Trump has put all his energy into trying to find out "how much money people, companies and other nations are willing to put into his pockets in the hope of bending government power to serve their interests".
The enquiry's count includes only his documented earnings: the $1.4 billion figure would not be a complete account. "It is impossible to know how often Trump makes official decisions, in part or in full, because he wants to get richer," the board writes. "And that is precisely the problem. A culture of corruption is pernicious because it is not only a deviation from government in the public interest, but it is also the destruction of the democratic legitimacy of the state."
From the licensing linked to the Trump brand worldwide, for instance, 'The Donald' would have earned at least 23 million dollars. For the making of a documentary dedicated to the figure of the first lady Melania Trump, the president's family would have cashed in from the e-commerce platform Amazon 28 million dollars . On an overall level, according to the New York Times, the media tech company would have poured something like 90.5 million dollars into the Trump coffers.
The state of Qatar, then, as is well known, has given the American president a $400 million aircraft to be included in the Air Force One fleet. Trump counts on continuing to use the aircraft, in his personal capacity, at the end of his term. And then there is the cryptocurrency knot, from which 'The Donald' is estimated to have raised something like 867 million dollars. Doing the math, according to the New York Times Trump has profited from his return to the presidency to the tune of 16,822 times the median income of US households.
