Can an Olympics send a sign of peace in a world at war? How many times has the history of the games intertwined with geopolitical scenarios? And how will sport in the second millennium change after the Paris 2024 Olympics?
A little more than a month before the start of the Paris Olympics, marked by the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East and the new international tensions, the new original Radio 24 podcast "Olympics of War and Peace" by Dario Ricci, journalist and Radio 24 presenter, on the history of the modern Olympics, the 20th century and this first part of the New Millennium and their close link with conflicts, international tensions and social struggles, is released on 17 June 2024.
From the Games of Berlin 1916, Tokyo 1940 and London 1944 cancelled and recovered many years later due to the two world wars, to those marked by the Cold War and boycotts, Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984. From Smith and Carlos's black glove raised in the sky of Mexico City 1968, to the Beijing Olympics 2008 symbol of the New World and those of 2022 with the image of a new world power China, up to Paris 2024, the Olympics of a world again marked by war.
'The world that is approaching the Paris 2024 Games is also a world dangerously close to a new global conflict,' says author Dario Ricci, journalist and presenter of Olympia on Radio 24. 'We must therefore look at the next Olympics with a new and different gaze, not to reminisce, but to understand what almost 150 years of modern Olympism have told us about the relationship between sport and politics. This is what we have done in this podcast, re-reading the history of the Games not only through the champions, but above all by re-reading the role of heads of state, presidents, parliaments, discovering that Tommie Smith and Putin have equally influenced the history of the Olympics, and the history of us all. And they will continue to do so for future generations, because Paris 2024 will forever change the sport and the world of tomorrow'.
"Olympics of peace and war" is the new eight-part podcast on Radio 24 by Dario Ricci - journalist and presenter of Olympia. Miti e verità dello sport on air every Sunday at 4.30 pm on Radio 24, - who guides us along eight paths of Olympic history: No winners, the Games and the Great War. Berlin 1936, the Führer and the failed boycott. The Olympics and the Cold War. From Tommie Smith to Kaepernick, the long shadow of a black fist.
