A few months have passed since the launch of the Omoda brand on the Italian market, it was July. Now it's time to test drive the first model from the Chinese brand belonging to the Chery group, the Omoda 5. The design is original and in keeping with European stylistic tastes, as is the level of on-board technology. The quality is surprising, but you no longer have to rely on the cliché of low Chinese quality, quite the contrary. Moreover, the wow effect comes with the price, which is close to 30 thousand euros for the top-of-the-range trim.

Coupe silhouette

.

The character of the Omoda 5 is immediately identifiable in the large integrated matrix front grille as well as in the coupé-style roofline. In fact, the front end is dominated by the large grille that features some diamond-like details in glossy black. These elements are not only decorative but also aerodynamically functional.

From the side one can appreciate the small dimensions of the crossover: 4.37m long, 1.82m wide and with a wheelbase of 2.61m. The design of the 18-inch wheels, which combine style with an aerodynamic function, has also been studied in detail.

The sportiness is emphasised at the rear, where the typical fastback profile can be seen and there is a spoiler with two headlights to optimally channel air and improve aerodynamics.

Finally, the luggage compartment: opening the tailgate provides 306 litres of load capacity, which becomes 1,075 litres by lowering the backrest of the rear seat.

Quality and technological interiors

.

Once on board, one is amazed by the build quality as well as the materials used and the high level of technology on board. The upholstery is soft and has an integrated headrest, just like a sports car. Both the door panels and the dashboard are of a high standard and well-assembled materials that do not cause annoying creaking noises during driving like other cars of emblazoned brands. In addition, there is an essential style, there are few physical buttons and most of the adjustments are entrusted to the touch screen in the centre of the dashboard that creates continuity with the digital dashboard.

The central tunnel is empty in the lower part and it is possible to place objects on it, but beware that these can fall out with a sporty driving style. While in the upper part there are several storage compartments as well as a space for inductive charging also equipped with a ventilation fan.

The passenger can count on a small hook to hang a handbag.

In the second row of seats, passengers can get in and out comfortably and the legroom is also quite generous.

Simple and clear range

.

Two trim levels are available at launch, Comfort and Premium. In addition, seven body colours are available for customisation.

The engine range currently only includes a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol solution with 147 hp (108 kW) and 275 Nm of torque mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The horsepower may seem low, but the acceleration is interesting for such a vehicle; 0-100 km/h is covered in 10.1 seconds.

In the test we were amazed by the quietness of the cabin, it almost feels like being in an electric car. The acceleration is good as is the smooth and pleasant ride. The steering is quite smooth and direct. While a demerit is for the rear visibility: the choice of a reduced rear window also means a diminished view.

Despite the height from the ground, we did not notice much body roll (it is standard in the segment) this is certainly thanks to the steel and aluminium T1X platform as well as the independent suspension. This system has also allowed it to receive top ratings in all countries of marketing, including the 5-star Euro Ncap. Numerous Adas are already on board in the entry version.

There are three driving modes: eco, normal and sport. The silence in the cabin in sport mode is broken by an obviously fake sound reminiscent of sports cars, an element that clashes with the style of the car.

Finally, consumption: the manufacturer claims 7.4l/100 km and in the test, which involved a mixed route, we found 7.6l/100 km, so quite in line with what was expected.

It has already been announced that a 100 per cent electric version of the Omoda 5 with a range of around 400 kilometres will also arrive soon.

Prices and sales network

.

List prices are 27,900 euro for the Comfort version and 29,900 euro for the premium.

Launch offers are also available: for contracts signed with the official Omoda and Jaecoo sales network before 30 September, it will be possible to order the Omoda 5 Premium at the price of the Comfort, an advantage of 2,000 euros;

The brand's sales network is expanding in Italy, the goal by the end of 2024 is to reach 80 dealers.
